Ryan Condal, the co-showrunner of House of the Dragon Season 2, has disclosed the start date for filming the second season of the Game of Thrones prequel, as well as potential release dates.
According to House of the Dragon’s co-showrunner Ryan Condal, the start date for production on the second season of the show has been revealed. The Game of Thrones prequel, which draws inspiration from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, recently concluded its first season featuring Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Emma D’Arcy. The series takes place 200 years prior to the events of HBO’s Game of Thrones and narrates the events that led to the downfall of House Targaryen, 172 years before the birth of Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys.
After just five days since the pilot episode was aired, HBO had already greenlit House of the Dragon for a second season. However, co-showrunner and pilot episode director Miguel Sapochnik departed the show due to his desire to pursue other projects. With season 1 being a tremendous success, preparations for the next season are already underway.
In a recent interview with Variety, Ryan Condal revealed that the production for House of the Dragon season 2 will commence in early 2023. However, he did not specify a particular date within that timeframe. The showrunner also mentioned that he is uncertain if the second season will be aired in 2023 or early 2024, as it is still “to be determined.” Following Miguel Sapochnik’s exit, Condal has taken on the role of sole showrunner for the series.
House of the Dragon Season 2 Premiere Date: What We Know So Far
Although there is a possibility of late 2023, it is more likely that House of the Dragon Season 2 will be released in 2024. Production for the first season started in April 2021 and ended in February 2022. The first episode was released in late August 2022, and the finale aired on October 23, 2022. As television series often work differently than film productions, it is common for a longer production timeline between seasons.
Based on the production schedule and release timeline for season 1, it is likely that House of the Dragon season 2 will be released in early 2024. The first season ended on a cliffhanger, with Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) learning of Lucerys’ (Elliot Grihault) death and revealing a tearful face before the show cuts to black. It remains to be seen how this event will impact her arc in season 2. A potential time jump between seasons could bring the audience closer to the Targaryen civil war of succession, which is a major event in the prequel’s storyline.
