UVA Secures Second Transfer of Off-Season with the League’s Top Freshman

Virginia basketball made another significant gain in the transfer portal just days after their initial success in securing Merrimack’s Jordan Minor. Tony Bennett’s team has now confirmed Andrew Rohde, a freshman guard standing at 6’6″ from St. Thomas, Minnesota, as their newest addition. Andrew Rohde announced his commitment to the Cavaliers earlier this Tuesday.

Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Andrew Rohde wasn’t prominently noticed during his high school recruitment phase and ended up at St. Thomas where he shone brightly. Launching all 31 games in his first year, he averaged 17.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. His impressive freshman year earned him the Summit League Freshman of the Year title and a spot on the All-Summit League First Team. Andrew Rohde put up impressive numbers in matches against high-level competitors last season, including 15 points against Creighton, 16 points against Utah, 10 points against Kansas State, and a season-high 23 points against Oral Roberts, an NCAA Tournament team, in the Summit League Tournament.

With a height of 6’6″ and weighing 185 pounds, Andrew Rohde brings excellent size to the guard role. He possesses the necessary ball-handling and passing abilities of a conventional point guard and can defend up to three positions. Although he recorded a 32.0% three-point shooting rate in his freshman year, this came from a high number of attempts, including off-the-dribble shots and those from far beyond the arc. As Andrew Rohde joins Virginia, it’s expected that his number of attempts will reduce, particularly off-the-dribble shots, likely resulting in an improved shooting percentage due to fewer, but better-quality opportunities from the three-point territory.

Crucially, Andrew Rohde delivers the much-needed scoring prowess for the Cavaliers. He concluded the previous season with a streak of five consecutive games scoring 20 points or more, eight out of the last ten games exceeding 20 points, and an unbroken series of 16 games with double-figure points. Given the potential departure of UVA’s top five scorers from the past season, Andrew Rohde’s scoring capacity alone makes his commitment a significant gain for the Hoos.

Moreover, Andrew Rohde arrives at Virginia with three years of eligibility left. This offers three years of growth under the guidance of Tony Bennett and his team, importantly including Mike Curtis and the UVA strength and conditioning program. Given Andrew Rohde’s already impressive 6’6″ physique, this program could truly optimize his potential.

With Andrew Rohde and Jordan Minor committing to the team, Virginia has now occupied nine scholarship places for the 2023-2024 season (or ten if Reece Beekman re-enrolls). While UVA is likely to seek at least one more player from the transfer portal, they are also scouting the high school recruiting field. Recently, Blue Cain, a four-star shooting guard from the 2023 class, visited UVA, as did Jarin Stevenson, a potential early entrant for 2023 from the 2024 class and a five-star forward, the preceding weekend.
