Wimbledon 2022 results: At the All England Club, Novak Djokovic and Elena Rybakina win singles championships.

The Wimbledon 2022 tournament is over. After defeating Nick Kyrgios on Sunday with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and 7-6 (7-3), No. 1 seed and current world No. 3 Novak Djokovic won his sixth Wimbledon championship. To earn her first Grand Slam title on the women’s side, No. 17 seed Elena Rybakina defeated Ons Jabeur in the women’s final on Saturday.

The outcome on Sunday allowed Djokovic to extend his winning streak at Wimbledon to 28 games. He currently holds 21 major championships, one less than Rafael Nadal’s record. His eighth All England Club final and 32nd Grand Slam final both took place on Sunday. Kyrgios was taking part in his first-ever Grand Slam final at the time. Despite the 27-year-defeat, old’s Kyrgios still has a winning record of 2-1 versus Djokovic, one of only five players to have such a record.

Rafael Nadal withdrew from the semifinal due to an abdominal injury, allowing the unseeded Kyrgios to advance by taking a walkover. With his second straight comeback victory, Djokovic defeated No. 9 seed Cameron Norrie to advance to the championship match.

Rybakina’s victory made her the first woman from Kazakhstan to win a significant competition. She was born in Russia and continues to reside in Moscow, but she transferred to Kazakhstan in 2018 when the country’s tennis organisation provided her with more assistance than she had in her own Russia. Jabeur, on the other hand, became the first African-born player and Arab woman to compete in a Grand Slam final.

Iga Swiatek, the female No. 1 seed, lost to Alizé Cornet in the third round, ending her winning run. The number one player in the world had triumphed in her last six competitions and 37 straight matches, including victories at the Roland Garros French Open, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, and Rome. With her victory, Cornet advanced to Wimbledon’s fourth round for the first time since 2014.

On June 28, Serena Williams returned to the court for the first time since Wimbledon 2021. She hadn’t competed since last June, when she hurt her hamstring during her All England Club first-round match. Williams and Harmony Tan played for three hours and eleven minutes before Tan emerged victorious, winning 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) in the match. However, this is the first time Williams has lost a match in the first round at Wimbledon and just the second time she has been defeated on the court in the first round of a Grand Slam. Williams had to retire in the first round at the All England Club last year, which was her only first-round exit prior to this year (2012 French Open).
